Outside 7am to 7pm NEA doesn't report UV. The index is measured at Changi; cloud and rain lower it, so it can differ across the island.

NEA and MOH sun protection checklist

Sunglasses that block UVA and UVB
A broad-brimmed hat

How this works

The reading comes live from the National Environment Agency (NEA) through data.gov.sg and refreshes every 5 minutes. NEA measures the UV index at the Changi Meteorological Station between 7am and 7pm; the data feed gives one value per hour, and this page shows the latest one with the hour it is for and when NEA published it.

NEA's categories are Low (0 to 2), Moderate (3 to 5), High (6 to 7), Very high (8 to 10) and Extreme (11 and above). Cloud and rain lower the index, so it can differ in other parts of the island.

Protection advice follows the World Health Organization: at 0 to 2 you can safely enjoy being outside; at 3 to 7 seek shade during midday hours and wear a shirt, sunscreen and a hat; at 8 and above avoid being outside during midday hours. NEA and MOH advise sunscreen of at least SPF 30, an umbrella or shade, UVA/UVB sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat, especially between 11am and 3pm, when UV is highest.

FAQs

What is a high UV index in Singapore?

NEA classes a UV index of 6 to 7 as High, 8 to 10 as Very high and 11 and above as Extreme. NEA says UV levels are highest between 11am and 3pm, so that is when protection matters most.

What time is UV strongest in Singapore?

Between 11am and 3pm, according to NEA. The hourly chart on this page shows how today's index has built up since 7am.

Do I need sunscreen at UV index 3?

Yes. WHO advises sun protection from a UV index of 3: seek shade during midday hours and wear a shirt, sunscreen and a hat. NEA recommends sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

Where is Singapore's UV index measured?

At NEA's Changi Meteorological Station, between 7am and 7pm. Because cloud and rain reduce UV, conditions elsewhere on the island can be higher or lower than the reading.
