1-hr PM2.5 bands: what to do for the next hour
For immediate outdoor activities, NEA advises checking the latest 1-hr PM2.5 reading.
Band I: Normal
0 to 55 µg/m³
Continue with normal activities.
Band II: Elevated
56 to 150 µg/m³
Reduce strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour.
Vulnerable persons: avoid strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour.
Band III: High
151 to 250 µg/m³
Avoid strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour.
Vulnerable persons: avoid all outdoor activity for the next hour.
Band IV: Very high
251 µg/m³ and above
Minimise all outdoor activity for the next hour.
Vulnerable persons: avoid all outdoor activity for the next hour.
Vulnerable persons are the elderly, pregnant women, children, and people with chronic lung or heart disease. If you feel unwell, see a doctor. NEA publishes a 24-hr PSI forecast at haze.gov.sg when air quality is in the unhealthy range.
How this works
Readings come live from the National Environment Agency (NEA) through data.gov.sg and refresh every 5 minutes. NEA publishes the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) and the 1-hour PM2.5 concentration every hour for five regions: north, south, east, west and central. Each reading on this page shows the hour it is for and when NEA published it.
The 24-hr PSI bands are Good (0 to 50), Moderate (51 to 100), Unhealthy (101 to 200), Very unhealthy (201 to 300) and Hazardous (above 300). NEA advises using the 24-hr PSI (and its forecast, when air quality is unhealthy) to plan the next day's outdoor activities.
For the next few hours, NEA advises checking the 1-hr PM2.5 reading instead: Band I Normal (0 to 55 µg/m³), Band II Elevated (56 to 150), Band III High (151 to 250) and Band IV Very high (251 and above). NEA also publishes sub-indices for six pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, sulphur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide); the 24-hr PSI follows the highest sub-index, which during haze is PM2.5.
The advice shown follows NEA's published health advisory. It is general guidance, not medical advice: if you feel unwell, see a doctor.
FAQs
What PSI level is unhealthy in Singapore?
A 24-hr PSI of 101 to 200 is Unhealthy. At that level NEA advises healthy people to reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, and the elderly, pregnant women and children to minimise it. People with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it.
What is the difference between the 24-hr PSI and 1-hr PM2.5?
The 24-hr PSI averages air quality over the past 24 hours and is for planning tomorrow. The 1-hr PM2.5 shows the fine-particle concentration over the last hour and is for deciding what to do in the next few hours. Band II (56 to 150 µg/m³) means reduce strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour.
Should I avoid exercising outdoors during haze?
If the 1-hr PM2.5 is in Band II (56 to 150 µg/m³), NEA advises reducing strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour, and vulnerable persons should avoid it. From Band III (151 µg/m³ and above) everyone should avoid strenuous outdoor activity.
How often is the PSI updated?
NEA updates the 24-hr PSI and the 1-hr PM2.5 every hour, shortly after the hour. This page checks for new readings every 5 minutes and shows the time of each reading.
