++ means 10% service charge and 9% GST: S$100 of food comes to S$119.90.

How this works

"++" on a Singapore menu means the prices are before service charge and GST. The service charge (usually 10%) is added first, then 9% GST is charged on the food plus the service charge, because IRAS treats the service charge as part of the taxable price. So the multiplier is 1.10 × 1.09 = 1.199: a S$100 meal costs S$119.90.

Splitting evenly divides the final bill by the number of people. Splitting by item adds up what each person ordered (shared dishes are divided between the people who shared them) and applies the same 1.199 multiplier to each person's share, so everyone pays their fair part of the service charge and GST. A discount, if any, comes off the food before the charges are added.

Shares are rounded up to the next 10 cents by default so transfers are simple; the few cents extra go to whoever paid. The GST rate has been 9% since 1 January 2024.

FAQs

How do I calculate ++ on a restaurant bill?

Multiply the menu total by 1.199. A S$240 meal is S$264 after the 10% service charge (S$24), plus 9% GST on S$264 (S$23.76), for a final bill of S$287.76.

Is GST charged on the service charge in Singapore?

Yes. IRAS says the service charge is part of the price of the meal, so 9% GST applies to it: on a S$100 meal with a S$10 service charge, GST is S$9.90, not S$9.00.

How much does each person pay on a S$240++ dinner for four?

S$71.94 each, or S$72.00 rounded up to the next 10 cents. The bill comes to S$287.76 after the 10% service charge and 9% GST.

Do hawker centres charge service charge and GST?

Hawker stalls almost never add a service charge, and most are too small to be GST-registered, so set the service charge to 0% and switch GST off. Only GST-registered businesses can charge GST.
