Conventions

Births from 11pm to midnight

The Zi hour (子时) runs from 11pm to 1am. Most schools start the new day at 11pm; the 'late Zi' school (晚子时) changes the day pillar at midnight.

BaZi is a Chinese cultural tradition. This tool lays out the chart; it does not make predictions, and nothing here is health, financial or life advice.

How this works

BaZi (八字, "eight characters") writes the moment of birth as four pillars, each a Heavenly Stem over an Earthly Branch from the 60-pair sexagenary cycle. The year pillar changes at Start of Spring (立春, about 4 February), not on 1 January or at Chinese New Year, and each month pillar begins at one of the 12 "jie" solar terms, such as Awakening of Insects (惊蛰) around 5 March. The day pillar simply counts days in a 60-day cycle, and the hour pillar covers two-hour blocks starting at 11pm.

The solar-term times were generated with the open-source lunar-javascript library (astronomical calculation) for 1900 to 2100 and checked against the Hong Kong Observatory's 2026 solar-term times. The calculator's results were checked against lunar-javascript's own BaZi engine for 20,000 random Singapore birth times, and against published example charts for Steve Jobs, Barack Obama and Albert Einstein.

Your clock time is converted to the exact moment of birth using Singapore's historical time zones from the IANA time zone database: UTC+7:30 from September 1945 to the end of 1981 (and earlier offsets before that), UTC+8 from 1 January 1982. By default the hour pillar is read from the clock time you enter; switch on solar time to read it from the sun instead, as some practitioners do. Two conventions differ between schools and are left to you: whether 11pm to midnight counts as the next day, and whether hidden stems are counted.

BaZi is a Chinese cultural tradition. This tool shows the chart only: it makes no predictions, and nothing on this page is health, financial or life advice.

FAQs

What is my Day Master in BaZi?

The Heavenly Stem of your day pillar, which BaZi reads as the self. Someone born at 8.30am on 15 June 1990 in Singapore has the pillars 庚午 壬午 辛亥 壬辰, so their Day Master is 辛 (Xin), Yin Metal.

When does the BaZi year start in 2026 and 2027?

At Start of Spring (立春): 4.02am on 4 February 2026 and 9.46am on 4 February 2027, Singapore time. Someone born on 3 February 2026 still has the 乙巳 (Wood Snake) year pillar, even though Chinese New Year 2026 was on 17 February.

Does Singapore's old UTC+7:30 time zone change my BaZi chart?

It can, near a solar term. Start of Spring 1981 fell at 5.25am on Singapore clocks (5.55am China time), so a baby born at 5.40am on 4 February 1981 in Singapore was born after it, in the 辛酉 (Metal Rooster) year. A calculator that treats the time as UTC+8 would wrongly give 庚申 (Metal Monkey).

Should I use clock time or solar time for the hour pillar?

Schools differ. Singapore's clocks run about 65 minutes ahead of the sun today (about 35 minutes before 1982), so solar time can move a birth into the previous hour pillar. A birth at 1.15pm on 20 March 1975 is in the 未 (Goat) hour by the clock but the 午 (Horse) hour by solar time (12.32pm).

What are hidden stems in BaZi?

Each Earthly Branch is said to contain one to three Heavenly Stems (藏干): 子 holds 癸, while 寅 holds 甲, 丙 and 戊, for example. Switch on hidden stems to see them under each pillar and count them in the five-element chart.
