How this works

The moon goes through its phases once every 29.5 days on average (the synodic month). The four principal phases are instants: new moon when the moon and sun line up, first quarter, full moon when they are opposite, and last quarter. Their times here were computed for 2026 to 2028 with the open-source astronomy-engine library, converted to Singapore time (UTC+8), and checked against all 99 phases the US Naval Observatory lists for 2026 and 2027: every one matches to the minute.

The percentage lit is worked out on your device from the moon's phase angle (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms), within about half a percentage point of a full ephemeris. Moonrise and moonset are for central Singapore (1.35°N, 103.82°E), and match the US Naval Observatory to the minute; anywhere on the island is within a minute or so. A day with no moonrise or no moonset is normal, because the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day.

Festivals that follow the Chinese calendar fall on the 1st or 15th of a lunar month, and lunar months begin on the day of the new moon in UTC+8. So Chinese New Year always falls on a new moon day, but the 15th is not always the night of the exact full moon: Mid-Autumn Festival 2026 is on Friday 25 September, while the full moon is at 12:49 am on Sunday 27 September. Vesak Day and the Islamic months follow the moon too.
