Shops set their own buyback terms and quote below the selling price; there is no fixed rule in Singapore. Ask the shop for its rate, and whether stones are weighed out first.

At 5.0% below the gold value, a shop would pay about S$1,578.47. Workmanship and GST are not refunded, so selling straight back would lose about S$83.08.

How this works

Gold value = gold weight × price per gram for that purity. The purity number is the gold content in parts per thousand: 999 (24K) is 99.9% gold, 916 (22K) is 91.6%, 750 (18K) is 75%, 585 (14K) is 58.5% and 375 (9K) is 37.5%. If you enter the 999 price, the calculator prices other purities pro rata to their gold content, so at a 999 price of S$180 per gram, 916 gold works out to S$165.05 per gram. You enter the price yourself, from your jeweller's board, bank or bullion dealer: this page never fetches or guesses a live price.

Singapore's legal tahil (tael) is 1⅓ ounces, or 37.7994 g, and a chee (mace) is a tenth of that, 3.77994 g, under the Third Schedule of the Weights and Measures Act. Hong Kong's gold trade uses a slightly lighter tael of 37.429 g, so check which one a quote uses.

Jewellery is not investment precious metal. IRAS exempts only investment-grade gold (bars, ingots and wafers of at least 99.5% purity from accredited refiners, and listed coins) from GST, since 1 October 2012; gold jewellery bought from a GST-registered shop carries GST at 9%. GST-registered shops must display and quote GST-inclusive prices, so a shop's per-gram price normally already includes it.

Buyback: shops set their own buyback prices, usually below their selling price and with stones weighed out, and workmanship and GST are not refunded. The buyback deduction is an editable assumption (5% by default): ask the shop for its actual rate.

FAQs

How do I calculate the value of 916 gold?

Multiply the weight in grams by the 916 price per gram. If you only have the 999 price, multiply it by 916 ÷ 999 first: at S$180 per gram for 999, 916 gold is S$165.05 per gram, so a 10 g chain holds about S$1,650 of gold before workmanship.

How many grams is one tael of gold in Singapore?

37.7994 g. Singapore's Weights and Measures Act defines the tahil (tael) as 1⅓ ounces, and the chee as a tenth of a tahil, 3.77994 g. The Hong Kong gold-trade tael is 37.429 g.

Is there GST on gold jewellery in Singapore?

Yes. Gold jewellery is taxable at 9% GST when bought from a GST-registered shop. Only investment precious metals, such as gold bars of at least 99.5% purity from accredited refiners, have been GST-exempt since 1 October 2012.

What is the difference between 916 and 999 gold?

916 gold is 91.6% pure (22 karat) and 999 gold is 99.9% pure (24 karat). The other 8.4% of 916 is other metals such as silver and copper, which make it harder than 999, so per gram it is worth about 8% less than 999 gold.

How much will a shop pay to buy back my gold?

Less than you paid: shops buy back below their selling price, weigh out stones, and don't refund workmanship or GST. There is no fixed rate in Singapore, so get the buyback price per gram from two or three shops before selling.
