Bondee was a social networking app built around cartoon-style 3D avatars. It was made by Metadream, a Singapore-based company, and went viral across Asia in early 2023. The app has since been shut down. According to Wikipedia, Bondee was removed from the app stores on 4 March 2026, its main features were switched off, and Metadream had shut it down on both Google Play and the Apple App Store by 31 March 2026. If you are looking for the app today, it is no longer available.

What Bondee did

Bondee was announced in November 2022 and officially launched on 17 January 2023. Users could:

  • Create a figure-style 3D avatar and customise it
  • Decorate a virtual room
  • Message friends and express their mood through the avatar
  • Take part in small in-app activities such as camping, dancing, sailing and leaving notes for friends

Reviewers at the time compared it to Animal Crossing, Habbo Hotel and The Sims, with mixed to positive reception. Some said it lacked features, especially for playing games with friends.

Why it took off

Bondee topped the App Store charts in several countries in early 2023 and passed five million downloads on Google Play. Its soft, low-pressure style, with no public follower counts to chase, appealed to people tired of feed-based platforms.

What went wrong

Growth cooled quickly. In late January 2023, some users alleged unauthorised credit card charges linked to the app. Metadream denied collecting users' financial information, and cybersecurity experts said the app appeared safe. Bloomberg also reported in April 2023 that downloads had dropped after questions surfaced about the app's links to a Chinese app, Zheli (known as Jelly). The 2026 shutdown is a separate and later event.

If you used Bondee

Because the app has been closed, check the email or notices you received from Metadream about your data. For questions about personal data held by a Singapore company, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) is the regulator.
