Prawning, catching live prawns from a pond with a short rod and bait, is a popular way to spend an evening in Singapore with friends or family. Several ponds are open late or around the clock. Prawns are easy to hook but easy to lose, so a few habits make a big difference to how many you take home.
Get your bait to the bottom
Prawns spend most of their time near the bottom of the pond, so your bait needs to be there too. Use a small sinker or a weighted hook so the bait sinks rather than drifting midwater, and adjust your float so the bait sits just on or above the bottom.
Fresh bait works best. Chicken liver, prawn meat and fish pieces are common choices, and most ponds supply bait with the hourly fee. Hook it firmly so it does not come off when you cast.
Be patient when you get a bite
A twitch of the float usually means a prawn is picking at the bait, not that it is hooked. If you pull straight away, you will often lift the bait out of its claws. Wait a few seconds for the prawn to grab the bait and start moving off with it, then lift the rod with a smooth, steady pull. Rushing is the most common reason beginners lose prawns.
Prawns tend to bite in bursts, so if your corner of the pond goes quiet, recast to a different spot rather than reeling in and out repeatedly.
Keep tension in your line
Do not rely only on the float. Keep your line slightly taut and hold the rod with a light but firm grip so you can feel the prawn nibbling. Prawn bites are delicate, and feeling the line helps you time your lift. Keep the tension on as you bring the prawn up and out of the water, because a slack line gives it a chance to let go.
Before you go
- Check the venue. Opening hours, rates and rules vary, and some ponds have closed or moved in recent years. Our guide to the cost of prawning in Singapore lists ponds operating in 2026 and their published rates.
- Ask about gear. Most ponds rent house rods. If you want your own, see prawning equipment and gear.
- Go off-peak. Weekend and public holiday evenings are the busiest times.
