You do not need to own any gear to go prawning in Singapore. Most prawning ponds rent out house rods and supply bait as part of the hourly fee, so a first visit costs nothing extra in equipment. Buying your own rod starts to make sense if you go often, want a lighter or more sensitive rod than the house ones, or prefer to set up your line your own way.
This guide covers what you need, what the ponds usually provide, and where to buy prawning gear in Singapore. We checked the shops listed here in October 2026. We do not list prices, because tackle prices change with stock and promotions.
What you need
- A prawning rod. Prawning rods are short, light poles with a float, built to show the small, delicate bites prawns make. House rods are fine for beginners.
- Line, hooks and a small sinker. The sinker takes the bait down to the bottom of the pond, where prawns feed. See our prawning tips for why that matters.
- Bait. Ponds usually supply it. Chicken liver, prawn meat and fish pieces are common choices.
- A towel and a small container or bag for your catch, plus wet wipes, since bait and prawns are messy.
Not every pond lets you use your own rod or bait, so ask the venue before you bring your own kit.
What the ponds supply
Hourly prawning fees normally include a house rod and bait. Time Out's listing for Hai Bin Prawning, for example, says its hourly fee includes equipment and bait. Some ponds also sell small accessories and have grills where you can cook your catch. Rules and inclusions vary by venue, so check with the pond before you go. Our guide to the cost of prawning lists the ponds operating in 2026 and their published rates.
Where to buy prawning gear
- REDTACKLE. An online fishing tackle shop based in Singapore. When we checked on 12 October 2026, its homepage listed several prawning rods, including Huerco and Rainbow models, alongside reels, lines and lures. Its site also said deliveries would resume after 21 October, and it takes enquiries by WhatsApp.
- Fishing Buddy Singapore. A Singapore-based online tackle shop that ships locally and overseas. It sells rods, reels and lines, but its homepage does not show a prawning section, so email the shop to ask about prawning rods before you order.
- Nalno.com. An online outdoor equipment store listed in Kallang, selling fishing rods, reels, hooks, lines, tackle boxes and camping gear. It has no prawning-specific category, so check individual listings or contact the store.
- Lazada and Shopee. Both marketplaces carry prawning rods, floats and hook sets from many sellers. Check the seller's ratings and the rod length and weight before you buy.
- At the pond. Some prawning venues sell bait and small accessories on site. Ask the staff which rod and hook size they recommend for their ponds.
Learn from videos first
If you are buying your first rod, it helps to watch a few prawning videos on YouTube. Search for "Singapore prawning" to see how anglers set up their floats and hooks and how a bite looks on the float. Then read our guide to effective prawning techniques, or start with prawning for beginners.
Where to go prawning
Prawning ponds listed by Little Day Out in April 2026 include Fish @ Woodleigh, Fish @ Pasir Ris, Prawning at ORTO West Coast, ATC Fishing Village at Jurong Hill and Riviera Prawn Fishing in Punggol. Hai Bin Prawning in Punggol is at Punggol East Container Park, which Time Out reported in September 2026 will close when its land tenancy ends on 31 December 2026. Stock, store details and venue rules change, so contact the shop or pond before you travel or buy.
