How this works
For a Singapore citizen child, a mother who has worked for her employer for at least 3 continuous months before the birth gets 16 weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave. For a first or second child the employer pays the first 8 weeks and the Government reimburses the last 8; from the third child the Government reimburses all 16, capped at S$10,000 per 4 weeks. If the child is not a citizen, mothers covered by the Employment Act get 12 weeks, of which the first 8 are paid if they had fewer than 2 living children.
Fathers who are married to the mother get Government-Paid Paternity Leave: 4 weeks for children born from 1 April 2025 (2 weeks before that), taken within 16 weeks of the birth, or within 12 months by agreement. Shared Parental Leave is 6 weeks for children born from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 and 10 weeks from 1 April 2026, split half each by default and used within the child's first year. Paternity and shared leave are reimbursed up to S$2,500 a week. Adoptive mothers get 12 weeks of adoption leave for a child under 12 months.
After that, each parent gets 6 days of childcare leave a year until a citizen child turns 7 (2 days for a non-citizen child, under the Employment Act), 2 days of extended childcare leave a year while the youngest citizen child is 7 to 12, and 12 days of unpaid infant care leave a year while the child is under 2. At the National Day Rally 2026 the Government announced that childcare leave will become 8 to 12 days a year depending on the number of children aged 12 and below; the start date is still to be announced. Rules here are MOM's and MSF's as of October 2026.
FAQs
How long is paternity leave in Singapore in 2026?
4 weeks of Government-Paid Paternity Leave for a Singapore citizen child born on or after 1 April 2025, if you are married to the mother and have worked for your employer for at least 3 months. That is 20 working days on a 5-day week, plus your share of shared parental leave.
How much shared parental leave do we get?
10 weeks for a child born on or after 1 April 2026, or 6 weeks for a child born from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. It is split 5 weeks each (or 3 each) by default, and you can reallocate it on LifeSG. It must be used before the child's first birthday.
How many weeks of paid leave do both parents get for a 2026 baby?
Up to 30 weeks for a Singapore citizen child born from 1 April 2026: 16 weeks of maternity leave, 4 weeks of paternity leave and 10 weeks of shared parental leave, if both parents qualify.
How many days of childcare leave do I get?
6 days a year per parent until your Singapore citizen child turns 7, whatever the number of children, then 2 days a year of extended childcare leave until your youngest is 12. A planned change to 8, 10 or 12 days a year by number of children has been announced but has no start date yet.
Do I get maternity leave if I just joined my company?
Not statutory leave: you need at least 3 continuous months of service before the birth for maternity, paternity, shared parental and childcare leave. Employers may give it voluntarily, and MSF can reimburse them for paternity leave.
