How this works
Overtime rules sit in Part 4 of the Employment Act, which covers workmen earning a basic monthly salary of up to S$4,500 and non-workmen earning up to S$2,600. Managers and executives are not covered. For a monthly-rated employee the hourly basic rate is 12 × monthly basic salary ÷ (52 × 44), and overtime is paid at least 1.5 times that rate. For non-workmen the rate is capped at the S$2,600 salary level (S$13.60 an hour).
Work on a rest day at your employer's request earns one day's basic pay for up to half your normal daily hours and two days' pay for more than half, plus overtime for hours beyond your normal day. If you asked to work, it is half a day's pay and one day's pay. A day's basic pay for a monthly-rated employee is 12 × monthly basic ÷ (52 × working days a week).
Working on a public holiday earns an extra day's pay at the basic rate (or a day off in lieu, if you both agree), plus overtime for hours beyond your normal hours. Overtime is capped at 72 hours a month and must be paid within 14 days of the end of the salary period. Rates here are rounded to the cent, as on a payslip.
FAQs
How is overtime pay calculated in Singapore?
Overtime is 1.5 × your hourly basic rate, which is 12 × monthly basic salary ÷ (52 × 44). On a S$2,200 basic salary the hourly rate is S$11.54, the overtime rate is S$17.31, and 20 hours of overtime pays S$346.20.
Who is entitled to overtime pay in Singapore?
Workmen earning a basic salary of S$4,500 or less a month and non-workmen earning S$2,600 or less are entitled to overtime pay under Part 4 of the Employment Act. Managers, executives and anyone above these limits get overtime only if their contract provides for it.
How much do I get for working on a rest day?
If your employer asks you to work on your rest day, you get one day's basic pay for up to half your normal daily hours and two days' pay for more than half, plus overtime beyond your normal hours. On S$3,000 basic over a 5-day week, one day's pay is S$138.46, so a full rest day earns S$276.92.
What is the maximum overtime allowed in Singapore?
An employee can work up to 72 overtime hours a month, and no more than 12 hours in a day. Hours on a rest day or public holiday count toward the 72 only where they go beyond normal daily hours.
