× 1.09 (GST 9%)

Singapore GST has been 9% since 1 January 2024. To find the GST inside a price, divide by 109 and multiply by 9 (the 9/109 fraction).

How this works

Singapore's Goods and Services Tax has been 9% since 1 January 2024 (8% in 2023, 7% before that). To add GST, multiply the price by 1.09. To remove it from a GST-inclusive price, divide by 1.09; the GST inside the price is 9/109 of it.

A “++” price at a restaurant means service charge and GST are both added. The service charge (usually 10%) is added first, and GST is charged on the food plus the service charge, so the bill is the menu price × 1.10 × 1.09 = 1.199. Service charge is set by the restaurant, not by law, so you can pick another rate.

Amounts are rounded to the cent at each step, as on a till receipt. A business may round its total slightly differently.

FAQs

How do I calculate 9% GST in Singapore?

Multiply the price by 0.09 to get the GST, or by 1.09 for the total. S$100 before GST is S$109 with GST, of which S$9 is GST.

How do I remove GST from a price?

Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.09. A S$109 price is S$100 before GST. To find just the GST inside a price, multiply it by 9/109: S$50 includes S$4.13 of GST.

What does ++ mean on a Singapore menu?

It means 10% service charge and 9% GST are added to the listed price. A S$100 ++ meal comes to S$119.90: S$10 service charge, then S$9.90 GST on S$110.

Is GST charged on service charge?

Yes. GST applies to the service charge as well as the food, which is why a ++ bill is 1.199 times the menu price rather than 1.19.
