What licence should an accounting firm have?

  • Public Accountant registration

Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) · Required by law

Only registered public accountants and approved public accounting entities may audit and report on financial statements as required by law. Bookkeeping, tax and advisory work do not need this registration.

  • Chartered Accountant of Singapore, CA (Singapore)

Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) · Optional accreditation

A professional designation showing qualifications and continuing education. It is not needed for bookkeeping, and on its own it does not permit statutory audits.

  • Registered Corporate Service Provider

    ACRA · Required by law

Since 9 June 2025, firms that file with ACRA for clients or act as company secretary by way of business must be registered CSPs. Public accounting entities are deemed registered.

How to choose a accounting firm

  • Ask what the monthly fee covers: the number of transactions, bank accounts, payroll runs and GST returns. Fees jump when volume passes the bundled limit.
  • Check whether you need an audit. Many small private companies are exempt, but your accountant should confirm this each year. If you do need one, the auditor must be an ACRA-registered public accountant.
  • If your taxable turnover is close to $1 million, ask the accountant to monitor it monthly. IRAS applies both a retrospective test (past calendar year) and a prospective test (next 12 months).
  • Use cloud accounting software that you own the login to, so your records move with you if you change firms.
  • Confirm who signs off the tax computation and how IRAS queries are handled and billed.

Red flags

  • A firm that offers to 'audit' your accounts but is not on ACRA's public accountant register.
  • No engagement letter setting out scope and fees.
  • Keeping your accounting software login in the firm's name only.
  • Advice to keep turnover 'just under' the GST threshold by splitting it across entities.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How many transactions and GST returns does the monthly fee include?
  • Does my company need an audit this year?
  • Who prepares and signs the Form C-S, and is that in the fee?
  • Are you a registered corporate service provider, and do you also handle ACRA annual returns?

Questions about accounting firms in Singapore

How much does an accountant cost for a small company in Singapore?

As of 2026, published fees for a small non-GST company run about $80 to $200 a month for bookkeeping, and about $200 to $500 a month for GST-registered SMEs. Annual corporate tax filing (ECI and Form C-S or C) is typically $400 to $2,000. Audits for companies that need them are quoted separately.

When must my company register for GST?

IRAS requires GST registration when taxable turnover exceeds $1 million at the end of a calendar year (retrospective basis), or when you expect it to exceed $1 million in the next 12 months (prospective basis). For the prospective basis you must apply within 30 days of the forecast. Taxable turnover includes standard-rated and zero-rated supplies but excludes exempt supplies.

Does my Singapore company need an audit?

Not always. Small companies that meet ACRA's small company criteria are usually exempt from statutory audit, though they must still prepare financial statements and file returns. If an audit is required, only an ACRA-registered public accountant or public accounting entity can sign the audit report. Ask your accountant to confirm your status each financial year.

What is the deadline for filing Form C-S?

Corporate income tax returns for Year of Assessment 2026 are due by 30 November 2026, and companies must file even if they have no income or made losses, unless IRAS has waived the requirement. Form C-S (Lite) is for companies with revenue of $200,000 or less, and Form C-S for revenue up to $5 million that meet the conditions.
