What licence should a financial adviser have?

  • Licensed or exempt financial adviser (firm)

Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) · Required by law

Firms giving financial advice must be licensed under the Financial Advisers Act or be exempt (e.g. banks and insurers). The MAS Financial Institutions Directory shows each firm's permitted activities.

  • Appointed representative

Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) · Required by law

Individual advisers must be notified to MAS and listed on its representatives register with a representative number. The register shows the products they may advise on, the firm they act for, and any MAS actions against them.

How to choose a financial adviser

  • Ask for the adviser's MAS representative number and look it up. The firm on the register must match the firm on their name card.
  • Ask how they are paid: commission built into products, an advice fee, or a percentage of assets under management. Each creates a different incentive.
  • Choose advisers who do a fact-find on your income, goals and existing cover before recommending products. MAS rules require advice to have a reasonable basis.
  • Compare life insurance premiums on compareFIRST and read the product summary and benefit illustration before signing.
  • Be wary of recommendations to surrender existing policies to buy new ones, as switching often incurs losses.

Red flags

  • No representative number, or the person is not on the MAS register.
  • The person is on MAS's Investor Alert List, or promises guaranteed high returns.
  • Pressure to sign the same day or to pay into a personal account.
  • Advice to cancel existing policies without a written comparison.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What is your MAS representative number, and which firm do you represent?
  • How are you paid for this recommendation?
  • What are the total fees and charges each year?
  • What happens if I stop paying premiums or need to withdraw early?

Questions about financial advisers & insurance in Singapore

How do I check if a financial adviser is licensed in Singapore?

Ask for their representative number and search MAS's representatives register on the MAS website (mas.gov.sg/directories). It shows the activities they may carry out, the firm they act for, and any MAS action against them. Then confirm the firm in the MAS Financial Institutions Directory, and check MAS's Investor Alert List for unregulated entities.

Can I cancel a life insurance policy after signing?

Most new life insurance policies in Singapore have a 14-day free-look period from when you receive the policy, during which you can cancel and get the premium back, less certain expenses such as medical check-up costs. For investment-linked policies, the refund may be adjusted for changes in unit prices.

Are financial advisers in Singapore paid by commission?

Many are, through commission built into insurance and investment products. Others charge a fee for advice, or a percentage of the assets they manage. Fee-based advice can reduce conflicts of interest but is paid directly. Ask for the total cost in dollars before you commit.

What is the difference between an insurance agent and a financial adviser?

A tied insurance agent represents one insurer and can only sell that company's products. Representatives of licensed financial adviser firms can compare products from several providers. Both must be on MAS's register, but their product range differs, which affects how wide the comparison you get will be.
