How this works

Energy cost: an EV uses its efficiency (kWh per 100 km) x distance x your charging rate; a petrol car uses distance ÷ km per litre x the pump price. Default rates are SP Group's regulated household tariff of 31.16 cents per kWh with GST (1 October to 31 December 2026), and public charger prices of about S$0.70 per kWh for AC and S$0.89 per kWh for DC fast charging, as checked by Motorist in September 2026. Public rates vary by operator and site, so enter yours.

Road tax uses LTA's formulas. A petrol car pays 6-monthly road tax by engine capacity, for example [S$250 + S$0.375 x (cc − 1,000)] x 0.782 for 1,001 to 1,600cc. An electric car pays by motor power, for example [S$250 + S$3.75 x (kW − 30)] x 0.782 for 30 to 230 kW, plus an Additional Flat Component of S$350 every 6 months, which stands in for the fuel duty petrol drivers pay at the pump.

Breakeven is the extra price you pay for the EV divided by the yearly running-cost saving. Insurance, servicing, parking and ERP are left out because they depend on the model, and charging losses are not added (raise the kWh per 100 km to allow for them). The price premium is your own figure; fully electric cars registered in 2026 get the EV Early Adoption Incentive of up to 45% off ARF, capped at S$7,500, which ends after 31 December 2026.

FAQs

How much does it cost to charge an EV in Singapore?

At home on SP's Q4 2026 tariff of 31.16 cents per kWh, a car using 15 kWh per 100 km costs about S$4.67 per 100 km. At a public DC fast charger at about S$0.89 per kWh it is about S$13.35 per 100 km. A petrol car doing 14 km per litre at S$3.54 costs about S$25.29 per 100 km.

How is EV road tax calculated in Singapore?

By motor power: [S$250 + S$3.75 x (kW − 30)] x 0.782 every 6 months for 30 to 230 kW, plus a flat S$350 every 6 months. A 150 kW EV pays about S$1,795 a year, against about S$742 for a 1,598cc petrol car.

Is an EV cheaper to run than a petrol car in Singapore?

Usually, if you can charge at home. At 1,500 km a month, a 15 kWh/100 km EV charged at 31.16 cents costs about S$220 a month including road tax, against about S$441 for a 14 km/L petrol car at S$3.54. Charging only at DC fast chargers narrows the gap to about S$91 a month.

How long does it take for an EV to pay for itself?

With a S$10,000 price premium and the default numbers here (home charging, 1,500 km a month), the EV saves about S$2,657 a year and breaks even in about 3.8 years. Drive less or charge mostly at public DC chargers and it takes much longer.
