Compare with buying new
Your own quote and estimate. Road tax is assumed the same as your current car's base rate.
PARF and COE rebate or resale; your estimate.
Renewing early forfeits the unused part of your current COE. Deregister a renewed car before it expires and you get back only the unused part of the renewal premium, not PARF.

How this works
Renewing a COE does not need a bid: you pay the Prevailing Quota Premium (PQP) for your car's category. A 10-year renewal costs the full PQP and a 5-year renewal costs 50% of it, rounded up to the nearest dollar. A car renewed for 5 years (Category A or B) cannot be renewed again and must be deregistered at the end. The PQP is the moving average of the quota premiums in the latest three months of bidding; for October 2026 LTA published S$128,715 for Category A and S$131,616 for Category B.
Renewing means giving up the PARF rebate. A car deregistered at not more than 10 years old gets 50% of the ARF paid back (registered before February 2023), but there is no PARF rebate after the tenth year. On a renewed COE, the only rebate if you deregister early is the unused part of the renewal premium.
Road tax goes up once a car is more than 10 years old: a surcharge of 10% of the original road tax in the 11th year, then 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% from the 15th year onwards. This calculator works out the base road tax from engine capacity using LTA's formula for petrol cars, then adds the surcharge year by year.
The cost-per-year comparison is an estimate. It spreads the renewal premium, road tax, extra repairs and the PARF rebate you forgo over the years you keep the car, and compares that with a new car's price less its expected value after 10 years. Repairs, the new car price and its end value are your own assumptions.
FAQs
How much does it cost to renew a COE in October 2026?
Renewing for 10 years costs the PQP: S$128,715 for Category A and S$131,616 for Category B in October 2026. A 5-year renewal costs half, S$64,358 for Category A and S$65,808 for Category B. LTA publishes a new PQP every month after the first bidding exercise.
Do I get PARF if I renew my COE?
No. PARF rebates only apply to cars deregistered at not more than 10 years old, so renewing means forgoing the PARF (50% of the ARF paid for a car registered before February 2023). After renewal, the only rebate is the unused portion of the new COE if you deregister early.
Can I renew a COE twice?
Yes, if you renew for 10 years: you can renew again at the end. A 5-year renewal for a car (Category A or B) can only be used once, after which the car must be deregistered.
How much is the road tax surcharge for a car over 10 years old?
The surcharge is 10% of the original road tax for a car more than 10 years old, rising 10 points a year to 50% for cars more than 14 years old. For a 1,598cc petrol car with base road tax of about S$742 a year, that adds about S$74 in year 11 and S$371 a year from year 15.
Is it cheaper to renew COE or buy a new car?
It depends on the car's condition and what you would buy instead. At the October 2026 PQP, a 10-year Category A renewal works out to about S$12,872 a year before road tax, repairs and the PARF you give up. A new car costing S$200,000 that is worth S$20,000 after 10 years works out to S$18,000 a year. Use the comparison above with your own quotes.
