What is GrabHitch? How Grab's Carpool Service Works

GrabHitch is Grab's social carpool service in Singapore. How it works, how fares are set under LTA rules, and what drivers and riders should know.

GrabHitch is Grab's carpooling service in Singapore. It matches private-car drivers who are already making a trip with passengers going the same way. It is different from a normal Grab ride, where the driver works the trip as a job. Availability and features can change, so check the Grab app for what is offered today.

How GrabHitch works

Drivers with a private car set the journey they are making anyway. Riders book a seat on a matching trip through the Grab app. Matching is not guaranteed, and a driver may or may not be available for your route and time.

One 2026 consumer guide reports that GrabHitch fares are fixed by distance when you book, that rides can be scheduled up to seven days ahead, and that booking a couple of hours early improves your chance of a match. These details come from a third-party guide, so confirm them in the app.

The rules behind carpooling in Singapore

Carpooling is regulated by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). According to LTA:

  • Carpool drivers can accept a maximum of two trips a day.
  • Fares must only recover the cost of the trip, such as fuel, ERP and parking. It cannot be a commercial arrangement.
  • Paid trips arranged through informal channels such as chat groups are illegal. LTA advises commuters to use licensed platforms.
  • Unpaid lifts between family, friends or colleagues are allowed.

These rules are why carpool fares are usually lower than ride-hailing fares, and why drivers use the service to offset travel costs instead of earning a living.

Who can drive or ride

Riders need the Grab app and a payment method. Drivers need a private car and a valid driving licence, and must register and be approved through Grab. Exact requirements, such as minimum age and driving experience, are set by Grab and can change, so read them in the app before you sign up.

GrabHitch compared with other options

  • Standard Grab or taxi: a dedicated driver, door to door, usually at a higher fare.
  • Carpool apps such as Ryde's RydePOOL: another licensed carpool option under the same LTA cost-recovery framework.
  • MRT and bus: still the cheapest option for most trips; see the transport guides on Lookup for fares and routes.

Safety tips

Check the driver's name, car model and plate against the booking before you get in, share your trip with someone, and use the in-app help if something feels wrong.
