Understanding Motorcycle Rental Policies in Singapore

Renting a motorcycle can be a convenient way to get around Singapore, but rental companies set their own policies, and the rules differ for residents and visitors. Check the details with the company and with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) before you book.

Licence requirements

Singapore motorcycle licences are divided by engine size. Class 2B covers motorcycles up to 200cc, Class 2A covers 201cc to 400cc, and Class 2 covers larger bikes. To rent a bike, you generally need a valid licence for that class.

Visitors with a foreign licence may be allowed to ride on it for a limited period. One rental operator says a licence in English is acceptable, ASEAN licences are recognised, and other licences need an International Driving Permit or an official English translation, with visitors limited to Class 2B bikes. Treat this as one operator's interpretation and confirm the rules with LTA and the rental company.

Minimum age and experience

There is no single age limit. Companies set their own minimum age and riding experience, and published figures vary from 18 up to the mid-20s. Some also set an upper age limit. Ask the company before you book.

Insurance

Ask what the rental includes: whether insurance is included, who pays for damage or theft, the excess or deductible, and any extra fees. Do not assume the rental covers you for injuries or damage to others.

Deposits and documents

Expect to show your passport or NRIC and your licence, and to pay a refundable deposit. The amount depends on the company and bike. Ask when and how the deposit is refunded.

Available bikes depend on the company and your licence class. Larger bikes need the matching licence class.

Read the agreement

Before signing, check the rental period, mileage or usage limits, late return fees, fuel policy, accident procedure, breakdown support and the penalty for traffic offences, which are usually charged to the renter. Photograph the bike's condition before you ride.

Road rules

Singapore traffic rules apply to all riders. Helmets are required, and riders need to follow lane rules and speed limits. Expressway rules for motorcycles differ by bike type, so check the rules for your licence class.
