If you are a visitor locked out of a hotel room, rental apartment or car, a locksmith can help, but the right first call is often not a locksmith.

Call the right person first

  • Hotel room: Go to the front desk. Hotels have master keys or key-card systems and will let you back in after checking your ID. A hotel should not need an outside locksmith for a normal lockout.
  • Serviced apartment or short-term rental: Contact the host or property manager first.
  • Car: Contact the rental company or your roadside assistance provider.
  • Lost keys to your own home abroad: A locksmith is the usual option.

Finding a trustworthy locksmith

Locksmith services are open to abuse in many cities, with low advertised "from" prices that jump on arrival. We could not verify whether Singapore has a locksmith-specific licence, so do not assume a claim of being "licensed" means anything unless the business can show you proof. These steps help in any case:

  1. Ask your hotel or host for a recommendation. Locals often know someone reliable.
  2. Get a total quote by phone before they come. Ask for the call-out fee, the labour charge and any after-hours surcharge, and ask whether the price changes depending on the lock type.
  3. Be wary of very low advertised prices. If the number you are quoted is far below others, expect extras later.
  4. Check the business details. A real business has a registered name, a physical address and reviews that mention the actual work.
  5. Ask for identification and a receipt when they arrive, and prove you have the right to open the door (ID, booking confirmation or tenancy documents).
  6. Confirm availability. Many locksmiths advertise 24 hours, but after-hours calls often cost more.

What locksmiths do

  • Emergency lockout: opening a door, car or safe without damaging it where possible.
  • Key duplication: copying house, padlock and some car keys. See our guide to key duplication in Singapore.
  • Lock repair and replacement: fixing jammed locks, rekeying and installing new locks.
  • Safe services: opening safes and advising on installation.

Tips

  • Keep the hotel's number and address saved on your phone.
  • Take a photo of your room number and booking confirmation.
  • Pay by a traceable method and keep the receipt.
  • If you feel pressured or the price changes sharply, you can refuse the service and call someone else.
