With many locksmiths to choose from, it helps to know what to check before you hire one. These five tips cover the basics.
1. Research and read reviews
Look for locksmiths with consistent reviews and ratings from past customers. Online review platforms such as Google Maps can show how a locksmith is rated for professionalism, response time and pricing. Read several reviews, including the less positive ones.
2. Check the business details
Ask for the company name and UEN, and check that it is a registered business. Ask whether any licence or certification applies to the work, and ask to see it if so. We have not been able to confirm a specific locksmith licence requirement in Singapore, so if you want to be sure, you can ask the Police Licensing and Regulatory Department. Be cautious of anyone who will not give you a business name or a written quote.
3. Ask about insurance
Accidents can happen. Ask whether the locksmith has liability insurance that covers damage to your door or property during the job.
4. Get multiple quotes
Compare quotes from more than one locksmith if you have time. The cheapest quote is not always the best, so consider reputation, experience and reviews too. Look for a locksmith who gives a clear breakdown of all costs, including any call-out or after-hours fees.
5. Ask for recommendations
Friends, family and neighbours can tell you about their experience with a locksmith. Ask about the quality of the work, punctuality and whether the final price matched the quote.
