Locks are the first line of defence for your home. This guide covers how to choose a locksmith, work out what your home needs and avoid common problems when upgrading.
Find a reputable locksmith
- Ask for recommendations from neighbours, friends or your property agent.
- Check reviews and listings. Look for recent reviews and a consistent business name, address and phone number.
- Check the business details. Confirm the company's registration, and ask for a physical address. Be wary of ads with no company name.
- Ask for the price before work starts. Reputable locksmiths will give an estimate or fixed quote before they begin, and will explain call-out fees.
- Ask for identification when they arrive, and be ready to show proof that the home is yours.
Emergency lockouts are where scams most often happen. Compare at least two quotes by phone if you can, and be cautious of quotes that jump after the locksmith arrives.
Assess your security needs
- Entry points: doors, windows, gates and any balcony or service access.
- Lock types: compare mortise locks, deadbolts, gate locks and digital locks. For digital locks on fire-rated doors, check the model's fire certification.
- Extra measures: door viewers, door chains, window grilles, motion lights, CCTV or an alarm can add layers of protection.
Talk to the locksmith
- Explain what you want to secure and any brands you prefer.
- Ask for a written quote with parts, labour and warranty.
- Ask for recommendations, but compare them with your own research.
Upgrade properly
- Professional installation. A good lock fitted badly will not protect you.
- Quality products. Choose reputable brands with local warranty and spare parts.
- Regular checks. Lubricate, tighten fixings and replace worn parts. Replace batteries on digital locks on schedule.
- Rekey after moving in. If you have bought or rented a new home, change or rekey the locks.
When you are locked out
Check that you really cannot get in, contact your landlord, management office or family member with a spare key first, and then call a locksmith. For a suspected break-in, call the police first.
