What licence should an art studio have?

  • Private school registration (Education Act)

Ministry of Education (MOE) · Optional accreditation

Art schools that prepare students for an official certificate, and enrichment centres, must register with MOE if they teach 10 or more people. Recreational studios and art-jamming venues are generally not covered. Ask the studio which applies.

How to choose a art studio

  • Decide what you want. Structured, progressive programmes build skills over terms. Art jamming and one-off workshops are social and need no commitment.
  • Ask about class size and teacher-to-student ratio. Smaller groups cost more but give children more individual correction.
  • If you are preparing for a secondary-school or DSA portfolio, or an art-school application, ask to see past students' portfolios and the teacher's art training.
  • Check what the fee covers: materials, aprons, framing, exhibitions. Extra charges of $20 to $50 a term for materials are common.
  • Adults can check the MySkillsFuture course directory. Some adult art courses there accept SkillsFuture Credit, but children's classes do not.

Red flags

  • A full term or year charged upfront, with no written policy on missed classes or refunds.
  • No sample work or curriculum outline, especially for portfolio-preparation courses that charge premium fees.
  • Materials fees that are not disclosed until after enrolment.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How many students are in each class, and how long is each session?
  • Are materials included, and do children take their work home?
  • Can missed classes be made up, and is there a trial session?
  • What training or qualifications does the instructor have?
