What licence should a music school have?

  • Private school registration (Education Act)

Ministry of Education (MOE) · Required by law

A music school that prepares students for an official certificate, such as ABRSM or Trinity grades, must register itself, its courses and its teachers with MOE if it teaches 10 or more people. Individual home teachers do not have to register.

    Check the official register

How to choose a music school

  • Before you commit to a monthly fee, check whether the teacher prepares students for ABRSM or Trinity exams. Also ask what grades their recent students reached.
  • Compare costs per minute of lesson time. A $234 package of four 30-minute lessons works out to the same rate as about $117 an hour.
  • Plan for exam costs. A face-to-face ABRSM Practical Grade 8 costs $759 in 2026. Performance Grades, which are filmed at home or in the studio, cost $529 at Grade 8 and can be booked at any time.
  • Remember that Grade 5 Theory (or Grade 5 Practical Musicianship or a Grade 5 jazz subject) is needed before Practical Grades 6 to 8. Plan theory lessons early.
  • Ask for a trial lesson. For young children, also ask whether the school uses group foundation courses before individual lessons.

Red flags

  • Terms that require several months or a full term paid upfront, with no refund or make-up policy written down.
  • A school that adds an undisclosed 'exam handling' fee on top of ABRSM's published fees.
  • A school that pushes you to sit every grade quickly when your child is not ready. A failed exam costs the full fee again.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the school registered with MOE, and is this teacher registered to teach there?
  • How many lessons are in a month or term, and what happens when lessons fall on public holidays?
  • Do you charge anything on top of the ABRSM exam fee, such as accompanist or registration charges?
  • What is your make-up lesson policy if my child is sick?
