Average down (or up)
How many shares to buy at today's price to move your average cost to a target.
This is the average cost per share, the figure most brokers show. Dividends received and partial sales are not deducted. Fees exclude any CDP or custodian charges your broker passes on.

How this works
Average cost per share = total amount paid for all buys, including fees ÷ total shares held. Each buy costs shares × price plus fees. On SGX the fees are a clearing fee of 0.0325% and a trading fee of 0.0075% of the trade value, plus your broker's commission (a percentage with a minimum, from your broker's rate card), with GST at 9% on all of them (SGX fee schedule, checked October 2026).
The break-even price is the sell price at which the proceeds, after paying the same fees again on the sale, give back everything you put in. To average down, the calculator finds the smallest number of shares at today's price that brings the average cost to your target, rounded up to the board lot you choose.
This is the average cost method that brokers and the CDP show for a position. It does not subtract dividends received or adjust for partial sales, rights issues or share consolidations. Since 5 October 2026 SGX has cut the board lot to 10 shares for some counters priced above S$10, and to 1 share for counters above S$100; most stocks still trade in lots of 100.
FAQs
How do I calculate my average share price?
Add up what you paid for every buy and divide by the total shares. 1,000 shares at S$3.20 and 1,000 at S$2.80 cost S$6,000 for 2,000 shares, an average of S$3.00, or about S$3.0013 once SGX fees and GST of S$2.62 are included.
How many shares do I need to buy to average down?
Shares to buy = shares held × (current average − target average) ÷ (target average − new price). Holding 2,000 shares at S$3.00, getting the average to S$2.85 with a buy at S$2.60 takes 2,000 × 0.15 ÷ 0.25 = 1,200 shares, before fees.
What fees does SGX charge on each trade?
SGX charges a clearing fee of 0.0325% and a trading fee of 0.0075% of the trade value, 0.04% in total, and GST at 9% is added. On a S$10,000 trade that is S$4 plus S$0.36 GST, before your broker's commission.
What is my break-even price after fees?
It is the sell price at which proceeds after selling fees equal your total cost. With 2,000 shares costing S$6,002.62 including SGX fees and no commission, you break even selling at about S$3.0026, slightly above the S$3.0013 average cost.
