How to choose a lawyer

  • Pick by practice area. A conveyancing lawyer is not the right choice for a contested divorce or a criminal charge, so ask how many matters like yours they handled in the past year.
  • Ask for a written engagement letter that sets out the scope of work, the fee basis (fixed, hourly or stages), estimated disbursements, and whether GST is added.
  • Check that the lawyer holds a current practising certificate on the LSRA search before paying anything.
  • For a first view at no cost, Community Legal Clinics give free basic advice of about 20 minutes. They do not represent you in court.
  • Contingency fees, where the lawyer takes a percentage of damages, remain prohibited in Singapore. Conditional fee agreements are allowed only for certain matters, such as arbitration and some Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) proceedings.

Red flags

  • No engagement letter or written fee estimate.
  • An offer to take a share of your compensation as the fee in an ordinary court case.
  • Pressure to sign or pay immediately at the first meeting.
  • Someone giving legal advice for a fee who does not appear on the LSRA search.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How many cases like mine have you handled recently?
  • Is the fee fixed, hourly or staged, and what is the total estimate?
  • Which disbursements, such as court fees, are extra, and is GST included?
  • Who will actually do the work: you, an associate or a paralegal?
  • What are the realistic outcomes and timelines?

Questions about lawyers in Singapore

How do I check if a lawyer is qualified in Singapore?

Use the integrated online search run by the Ministry of Law's Legal Services Regulatory Authority (LSRA). It lists Singapore solicitors who hold a current practising certificate, as well as registered foreign lawyers and law practices. The Law Society of Singapore also has a Find a Lawyer directory. Results reflect data at the time of the search.

Can I get free legal advice in Singapore?

Yes. Community Legal Clinics, run with Pro Bono SG, give free basic legal advice in sessions of about 20 minutes but do not represent you in court. For civil matters such as divorce, the Legal Aid Bureau helps Singapore citizens and PRs who pass a means and merits test. For criminal charges, the Public Defender's Office or CLAS may help.

Who qualifies for legal aid in Singapore?

From 1 October 2026, the Legal Aid Bureau's means test requires average per capita gross monthly household income of $1,650 or less over the past 12 months. The annual value of your home must be $21,000 or less, and you must own no other property. Savings and non-CPF investments must be $12,000 or less, or $42,000 or less if you are 60 or older. A merits test also applies.

Can a lawyer take a percentage of my compensation in Singapore?

Generally no. Contingency fees based on a percentage of damages are still prohibited. Since 2022, conditional fee agreements, where the fee depends on success or includes an uplift, are allowed only for certain proceedings such as arbitration and some SICC matters. Ordinary personal injury and civil cases are charged on normal fee arrangements.
