How to choose a hair salon

  • Book by stylist, not by salon: prices and results vary with seniority, so look at the individual stylist's recent work on Instagram.
  • For chemical services (rebonding, perm, bleach), ask about a strand test and tell the stylist about previous colour or rebonding; repeated chemical work on the same hair causes breakage.
  • Get a written quote for long or thick hair; many menus show only the "from" price for short hair.
  • Pay per visit. The Government's November 2025 reply on high-value salon packages sold to seniors confirms pressure selling is an unfair practice, but recovering money after a closure is hard.
  • Bring reference photos and agree on the result before cutting.

Red flags

  • A "free scalp analysis" that turns into a pitch for an expensive treatment package.
  • Stylists who quote one price at the chair and a higher one at the counter (e.g. adding long-hair or product surcharges without warning).
  • Pressure on elderly family members to buy packages worth thousands of dollars.
  • No written receipt or package terms.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What is the total price for my hair length, including GST and product surcharges?
  • Who will do the service, and how many years have they been doing it?
  • Do you offer a free touch-up or redo if I'm not happy within a week?
  • Which products or chemicals will be used, and is a strand test needed?

Questions about hair salons in Singapore

How much is a haircut in Singapore?

As of mid-2026, a men's cut at a heartland barber costs about $8–12, express chains charge $12 (EC House) to $14–18 (QB House), and neighbourhood salons charge roughly $15–38. Mid-range salons start around $40–60, with senior stylists higher. Hairdressing schools such as Kimage offer supervised trainee cuts from about $7.

How much does rebonding cost in Singapore?

Budget salons advertise rebonding from about $78–95 for short hair, but long or thick hair, premium products and senior stylists can push the total to several hundred dollars. Always ask for a quote based on your actual hair length before the stylist starts, and confirm whether GST is included.

Do hair salons in Singapore need a licence?

There is no specific licence for hairdressing in Singapore; salons need normal business registration and premises approvals. If a salon offers massage beyond head or scalp treatments in private rooms, it may need a Police massage establishment licence. Quality depends on the stylist, so check portfolios and reviews.

What can I do if a salon pressured me into a package?

Exerting undue pressure on consumers is an unfair practice under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, regardless of age. Contact CASE for advice and mediation, or file a claim at the Small Claims Tribunals for up to $20,000. Keep receipts, package terms and any messages from the salon.
