How to choose a confinement nanny agency

  • Apply for the Work Permit early. Its validity runs from your baby's date of birth, so applying after the birth shortens it.
  • If you use an agency, check its licence and demerit points on MOM's EA Directory.
  • Agree in writing on dates, duties (baby care, confinement meals, light housework), rest time, and what happens if the baby arrives early or late.
  • Budget for the levy ($60 a month for a citizen baby, otherwise $300) and medical insurance on top of her fee.
  • Ask for references from recent families, especially for twins or premature babies.

Red flags

  • A nanny or agent suggesting she work without a Work Permit, or on a social visit pass.
  • An agency not on MOM's EA Directory.
  • Asking her to also work at another household, such as a relative's. She may only work at your residence.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Will you or I apply for the Work Permit, and who pays the levy and insurance?
  • What exactly is included: night feeds, confinement cooking, laundry, care of the mother?
  • What happens if my baby arrives early or late?
  • Is there a red packet or extra fee for twins, public holidays or extending her stay?

The levy is $60 a month if your newborn is a Singapore citizen, or $300 a month if not. If you also employ a domestic helper, the levies are combined and deducted by GIRO. You must also buy medical insurance; policies starting on or after 1 July 2023 need at least $60,000 of annual cover.
