What licence should a coding school have?

  • Private school registration (Education Act)

Ministry of Education (MOE) · Optional accreditation

Enrichment centres that teach 10 or more people must register the centre, its courses and its teachers with MOE. Ask a children's coding centre for its registration.

    Check the official register
  • TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) programmes, including TIPP

Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) · Optional accreditation

This is not a licence. It is a funding programme. Bootcamps approved under IMDA's Tech Immersion and Placement Programme (TIPP) can offer heavily subsidised fees to non-ICT professionals who are switching into tech roles.

How to choose a coding school

  • For children, match the tool to their age. Visual block coding (Scratch-style) suits early primary, and text languages such as Python suit upper primary and older. Ask whether there is a clear progression path rather than a series of one-off projects.
  • Compare class packs by cost per hour and validity period. Some packs expire in 6 months, which matters around exam periods.
  • For adult career switchers, check whether the bootcamp is TIPP-supported. TIPP is for Singapore residents with no prior education or work experience in the course's field who have not used TIPP before. It can cut a $10,000-plus fee by 70 to 95%.
  • Stack your funding. Le Wagon, for example, lets eligible learners use SkillsFuture Credit and NTUC UTAP alongside TIPP. UTAP refunds 50% of unfunded fees, up to $250 a year, or $500 for members aged 40 and above.
  • Ask for graduate outcomes: placement rates, typical roles, and whether career coaching and portfolio projects are included.

Red flags

  • Bootcamps quoting 'up to 95% subsidised' without explaining the eligibility conditions or the amount you will actually pay.
  • Guaranteed-job claims with no published placement data.
  • Children's centres that sell large prepaid packs with short expiry dates and no refund policy.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What will I pay after subsidies, and which conditions (attendance, assessment, employer sponsorship) could make me lose the subsidy?
  • Is this course listed on MySkillsFuture, and can my SkillsFuture Credit be used for it?
  • For kids: what will my child be able to build after one term, and how do you move them between levels?
  • What is the maximum class size and instructor-to-student ratio?

Questions about coding classes in Singapore

How much do coding classes for kids cost in Singapore?

Most children's coding and robotics classes cost about $30 to $80 an hour. Live online group classes sit at the low end, and small in-person robotics classes at the high end. Providers commonly sell packs, for example 20 classes for about $1,189 at Code Ninjas or a 10-hour robotics package for $480 at Nullspace. Holiday camps are priced separately and usually cost more per day.

Can I use SkillsFuture Credit for a coding bootcamp?

Yes, if the course is listed on MySkillsFuture and you are a Singapore Citizen aged 25 or above. All citizens get $500 base credit. Those aged 40 and above also received a $4,000 Mid-Career top-up (from May 2024), but it can only be used for a curated list of employability-focused courses. SkillsFuture Credit cannot be used for children's coding classes.

What is IMDA TIPP and how much does it cover?

The Tech Immersion and Placement Programme (TIPP) is part of IMDA's TechSkills Accelerator. It funds bootcamps that convert non-ICT professionals into tech roles. Approved providers advertise subsidies of up to 90 to 95% of tuition for eligible Singaporeans. You generally need to be switching into tech from another field, not have received TIPP funding before, and pay the remaining fee yourself.

How much does a coding bootcamp cost in Singapore?

Full-time immersive software or data bootcamps list fees of about $10,000 to $13,500 before subsidies. Shorter part-time courses in data analytics or coding basics run about $2,000 to $4,000. With TIPP, IBF or SkillsFuture funding plus NTUC UTAP, eligible Singaporeans often pay a fraction of the list price, so always ask for the net fee.
