What licence should a car rental company have?

  • Private Hire Car Driver's Vocational Licence (PDVL)

How to choose a car rental company

  • For trips under half a day, car sharing usually beats a daily rental. Add the mileage charge to the hourly rate before comparing.
  • Check the insurance excess, which is what you pay after an accident, and whether a damage-waiver add-on reduces it. Young or new drivers often face a higher excess.
  • If you plan to drive into Malaysia, confirm in writing that the car is allowed across the border and what the surcharge covers, including the Vehicle Entry Permit and Touch 'n Go.
  • Photograph the car's exterior, interior and fuel or charge level before driving off, and again when you return it.
  • For private hire driving, rent only from companies that list cars registered for private hire, and check the weekly rate, deposit and minimum rental period.

Red flags

  • Deposit taken in cash with no written rental agreement.
  • Car offered for Grab or Gojek work without private hire registration or insurance.
  • Vague damage charges with no pre-rental inspection record.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What is the insurance excess, and can I reduce it?
  • Is mileage unlimited or charged per km?
  • Can I drive the car into Malaysia?
  • What are the fees for late return, cleaning or a low fuel or charge level?

Questions about car & bike rental in Singapore

How much does it cost to rent a car in Singapore?

As of 2026, car-sharing services charge from about $65 to $77 for a weekday 24-hour block and about $95 to $120 on weekends, plus mileage of roughly $0.29 to $0.44 per km on some platforms. Traditional rental companies average about $97 to $144 a day on aggregator sites. Weekly car-sharing rates start from roughly $436.

Can I rent a car to drive for Grab?

Yes, but you must hold an LTA Private Hire Car Driver's Vocational Licence (PDVL). The car must be registered as a private hire car with insurance that covers ride-hail use. Many rental companies offer weekly Grab-ready plans. Compare the weekly rate, deposit, minimum period, servicing and what happens if the car is off the road for repairs.

Can I drive a Singapore rental car to Malaysia?

Only if the rental company allows it. Many companies limit or ban Malaysia trips, or charge a cross-border surcharge of about $20 to $50 a day in 2026 on top of the base rate. Ask about insurance coverage in Malaysia, the Vehicle Entry Permit, and whether you need a Touch 'n Go card.

Is car sharing cheaper than renting?

For short trips, usually yes. Car sharing charges by the hour, from about $3 to $9 for an economy car, plus mileage. For a full day or a weekend, a 24-hour block or a traditional rental can work out cheaper, especially if you drive long distances on a per-km plan.
