E-scooters are banned from footpaths, and riders of both need to pass LTA's theory test.

How to choose a bicycle shop

  • For PABs, insist on an LTA-approved model with the orange approval seal. It must be registered and display a number plate before you ride it on public paths.
  • For e-scooters, buy only UL2272-certified devices that meet LTA limits (25 km/h, 20 kg). Non-compliant devices are illegal to use on public paths.
  • Avoid shops offering to 'unlock' speed limiters or modify PABs. It is an offence and voids approval.
  • Get the bike fitted to your height. A good shop will adjust saddle height and reach before you leave.
  • Ask about warranty, free first service and spare parts availability, especially for imported e-bike batteries.

Red flags

  • PABs sold without the LTA orange seal.
  • Offers to modify motors, batteries or speed limiters.
  • Uncertified chargers or batteries.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is this PAB LTA-approved, and will you help register it?
  • Is the e-scooter UL2272-certified?
  • What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
  • Is the first service free?

Questions about bicycle shops in Singapore

Can I ride an e-scooter on the footpath in Singapore?

No. E-scooters have been banned from footpaths since November 2019. They may only be used on cycling paths and park connectors, at no more than 25 km/h, and the device must be registered, UL2272-certified and within LTA's weight and width limits. Riders must also pass LTA's online theory test.

What are the rules for e-bikes in Singapore?

Power-assisted bicycles must be LTA-approved with an orange seal, registered, and display a number plate. Motor assistance must cut out at 25 km/h and the bike must not exceed 20 kg. PABs are not allowed on footpaths, and riders need to pass the LTA theory test. Modifying a PAB is an offence.

How often should I service my bicycle?

A basic check of brakes, tyres and chain every few months is sensible for regular riders, with a full service about once a year. Singapore's humidity and rain speed up chain rust, so clean and lube the chain after wet rides. E-bikes also need battery and electrical checks.
