What licence should a TCM clinic have?

    Check the official register

How to choose a TCM clinic

  • Search the physician on MOH's Professional Registration System (TCM). Note whether they hold full or conditional registration.
  • Ask for a price breakdown: consultation, herbs per day, and each treatment such as acupuncture or cupping. A course of weekly acupuncture at $80–130 can add up to $4,000–6,000 a year.
  • Non-profit clinics such as Singapore Chung Hwa charge from about $11 including acupuncture and offer fee waivers for hardship; expect queues.
  • If you have integrated shield riders or corporate cover, check the TCM sub-limit and keep itemised receipts; claims usually need an MOH-registered practitioner.
  • Tell both your TCM physician and your doctor about all medicines and herbs you take.

Red flags

  • The practitioner is not on the TCM register, or will not give their full name.
  • Claims to cure serious illnesses, or advice to stop medicines your doctor prescribed.
  • Pressure to prepay a long course of treatment or large quantities of herbs on the first visit.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the physician fully registered with the TCM Practitioners Board?
  • What does today's visit cost in total, including herbs and treatments?
  • How many sessions do you expect, and when should I see improvement?
  • Can you give me an itemised receipt for insurance?

Questions about TCM clinics in Singapore

How much does a TCM consultation cost in Singapore?

At commercial clinics a first consultation costs about $45–160 and a follow-up $40–100 as of June 2026, with senior physicians at the higher end. Acupuncture adds $50–130 a session and herbs from about $10 a day. Non-profit clinics such as Singapore Chung Hwa charge much less, from about $11 for a consultation with acupuncture.

Can I use MediSave or CHAS for TCM?

No. MediSave cannot be used at TCM clinics, and CHAS does not subsidise TCM. The one exception is Flexi-MediSave for seniors aged 60 and above, which can be used for acupuncture for lower back or neck pain at public hospital specialist outpatient clinics only. Some private clinics offer their own CHAS-cardholder discounts, which are not government subsidies.

How do I check if a TCM physician is registered?

Use MOH's Professional Registration System and choose the TCM Practitioners Board register. It shows whether the practitioner is registered as a TCM physician or acupuncturist, whether registration is full or conditional, and whether they hold a current Practising Certificate. Anyone practising TCM in Singapore must be registered.

Does insurance cover TCM treatment?

Basic MediShield Life does not cover TCM. Some integrated shield riders, corporate group plans and wellness schemes reimburse TCM up to an annual cap, usually only when the treatment is given by an MOH-registered practitioner. Check your policy's benefits schedule for a TCM sub-limit and keep itemised receipts.
