What licence should a personal trainer have?

  • National Registry of Exercise Professionals (NREP)

Sport Singapore (CoachSG) · Optional accreditation

Voluntary national register for exercise professionals, searchable alongside the National Registry of Coaches. Listed professionals must hold valid Standard First Aid. Personal trainers do not need a licence to practise.

How to choose a personal trainer

  • Check certification on the issuer's website. Recognised certifications such as ACE, NASM, ISSA, ACSM or NSCA can be verified online, and a current CPR/AED or Standard First Aid certificate matters if you have health risks.
  • Pay for one trial session before buying a package. A free 'consultation' that ends in a sales pitch is not the same as seeing how they coach.
  • Pick a trainer whose clients look like you. Rehab after injury, pre- or post-natal training, older adults and powerlifting are different specialisms.
  • Ask where you'll train. A condo gym or ActiveSG gym ($2.50 per entry) can be much cheaper than PT that requires a $120–$250 monthly gym membership on top.
  • A good trainer writes a programme, tracks progress, and teaches you to train on your own eventually.

Red flags

  • Pushing a 30-session block upfront. At $120 a session that is about $3,600 with little protection if the trainer or gym disappears.
  • Packages that expire before you can realistically use them, or that can't be refunded or transferred.
  • Selling supplements or meal plans on commission, or giving medical-sounding diet advice beyond their training.
  • Vague or unverifiable certifications.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Which certifications do you hold, and can I verify them?
  • Do you have a current first aid or CPR/AED certificate?
  • What happens to unused sessions if you leave the gym, or if I'm injured or posted overseas?
  • How do you measure my progress, and how often do we review it?
  • Is the session price inclusive of GST and venue fees?

Questions about personal trainers in Singapore

How much does a personal trainer cost in Singapore?

As of 2026, an experienced personal trainer typically charges $90–$180 for an hour-long session, a newly certified trainer $30–$90, and a private-studio specialist $180–$350 or more. Small-group sessions cost about $40–$80 per person. Training twice a week with a mid-range coach works out to roughly $720–$1,600 a month.

Do personal trainers in Singapore need a licence?

No. There is no government licence for personal trainers. Sport Singapore runs voluntary registries, the National Registry of Exercise Professionals and the National Registry of Coaches, searchable via CoachSG's Find a Coach. Otherwise, check the trainer's certification with its issuer and ask to see a current first aid or CPR/AED certificate.

Should I buy a large personal training package?

Be careful. Prepaid packages are usually unprotected if the trainer quits or the gym closes. The True Fitness liquidation in September 2026 left members with unused packages, and CASE received over 1,500 complaints. Start with a paid trial, then buy no more than about 10 sessions at a time, and get the refund and expiry terms in writing.
