How to choose a handyman

  • Describe the job with photos to get a fixed quote; many handymen charge per item (per hole, per fitting) rather than per hour.
  • Check that the job is within what a handyman may legally do; anything involving new wiring or water pipes needs a licensed plumber or electrician.
  • Ask whether the quote includes transport, wall plugs and screws, and disposal of packaging.
  • For drilling into HDB walls, ask the handyman to check for concealed pipes and wiring first.

Red flags

  • Offers to rewire, add power points or change toilet bowls without a licence.
  • Minimum charges that are not mentioned until arrival.
  • No invoice or business details.

Questions about handyman services in Singapore

What plumbing jobs can a handyman do?

PUB allows handymen to replace taps, mixers, shower hoses and showerheads, repair flushing cistern mechanisms, install or replace washbasins, sinks and bathtubs, replace floor trap gratings, and clear blockages in floor traps and toilet bowls. Water pipe work and installing, changing or relocating toilet bowls must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber.

Can a handyman do electrical work?

Not for regulated work. EMA requires a Licensed Electrical Worker to install or modify wiring, add or replace sockets, switches or lighting points, and repair or replace circuit breakers. A handyman can assemble and mount items, but anything involving your home's wiring should go to a licensed electrician.

Do I need a permit to drill holes in my HDB flat?

Drilling to mount shelves, TVs, curtains or fittings does not need an HDB permit. Drilling is classed as noisy work, so do it during reasonable daytime hours on weekdays and give neighbours notice for longer jobs. Take care with walls that carry concealed pipes or wiring, especially in kitchens and toilets.
