How to choose a golf venue

  • Start at a driving range or simulator with a few lessons rather than buying clubs. Most ranges rent clubs, and simulators let you practise in air-conditioning, out of the rain.
  • Choose a coach certified by the Singapore Professional Golfers' Association (SPGA) or a PGA body. Ask whether lessons include course play, not just range time.
  • If you want to play full rounds, pick a programme that leads to a handicap or proficiency certificate, since many clubs require one from visitors.
  • Compare range pricing by time slot. Weekday mornings are much cheaper than weekend and evening slots.
  • Factor in green fees, buggy and caddy charges. A cheap lesson package can still lead to an expensive first round.

Red flags

  • Lesson packages with no fixed coach, or coaches who change week to week.
  • Courses that promise a handicap without any on-course assessment.
  • Simulator 'membership' bundles with short expiry and peak-hour exclusions.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the coach SPGA or PGA certified?
  • Does the package include range balls, club rental and course play?
  • Will I get a handicap or proficiency certificate at the end?
  • What are the peak and off-peak rates for the range or simulator?
