What licence should a car workshop have?

  • CaseTrust accreditation (motoring businesses)

Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) · Optional accreditation

A voluntary accreditation for fair trading practices, clear fee policies and dispute resolution. There is no compulsory licence for repair workshops in Singapore.

  • Insurer's authorised workshop or reporting centre

Motor insurers under the GIA Motor Claims Framework · Optional accreditation

After an accident, you must report at your insurer's authorised reporting centre or workshop within 24 hours or by the next working day. Repairs elsewhere may affect your claim.

  • LTA-authorised vehicle inspection centres

Land Transport Authority (LTA) · Required by law

Periodic inspections are done at LTA-authorised inspection centres (VICOM, STA Inspection, JIC Inspection Services), not at ordinary workshops. Cars need inspection every 2 years from age 3 to 10, then yearly.

How to choose a car workshop

  • Ask for a written itemised quote with parts (OEM, OE-equivalent or aftermarket) and labour listed separately, and agree that any extra work needs your approval first.
  • Under warranty? You can use an independent workshop. Following the CCCS case, dealers may only reject a claim if they show the independent workshop caused the fault, or if servicing was not done to schedule. Keep every invoice.
  • Specialists matter for continental, hybrid and EV models. Ask whether the workshop has the right diagnostic tools for your brand.
  • After an accident, go to your insurer's authorised reporting centre first. Taking the car to a tow-truck driver's workshop can complicate your claim and your No Claim Discount.
  • Ask for your old parts back. It is the simplest check that they were actually replaced.

Red flags

  • Tow drivers at accident scenes pushing you to a particular workshop.
  • Asking you to sign a blank or open-ended repair authorisation or claim form.
  • Refusing to give an itemised invoice or return old parts.
  • Large 'while we're at it' repairs added without your approval.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Are the parts OEM, original-equipment equivalent or aftermarket?
  • Is there a warranty on parts and labour?
  • Can I have the replaced parts back?
  • Will you call me before doing any work not on the quote?

Questions about car workshops in Singapore

How much does car servicing cost in Singapore?

In 2026, a minor service at an independent workshop is about $100 to $200, while authorised dealers often charge about $250 to $335. An engine oil and filter change costs roughly $88 to $300 depending on the oil and the car. One motoring guide puts the average regular service at about $188 and a major service at about $425.

Will servicing at an independent workshop void my car warranty?

Not by itself. After the competition regulator CCCS stepped in, major dealers removed terms that voided warranties just because a car was serviced elsewhere. Dealers can still reject a claim if they show an independent workshop caused the defect, if servicing missed the manufacturer's schedule, or if third-party parts caused the problem. Keep all service records.

What should I do after a car accident in Singapore?

Under the Motor Claims Framework, report the accident to your insurer within 24 hours, or by the next working day, even if you do not intend to claim. Bring the car to the insurer's authorised reporting centre or workshop with your driving licence and insurance certificate. Late reporting can cost you your No Claim Discount or lead to a rejected claim.

How often does my car need inspection in Singapore?

LTA requires no inspection for cars under 3 years old, an inspection every 2 years for cars aged 3 to 10 years, and every year once a car is over 10 years old. Inspections are done at LTA-authorised centres such as VICOM, STA Inspection and JIC Inspection Services, and you must pass before renewing road tax.
