Most people check what others say before they choose a restaurant, a contractor or a clinic. Reviews and recommendations help customers judge a business before they spend money.

What are reviews and recommendations?

A review is feedback left by someone who used a product or service. It can be a star rating, a written comment or a photo, posted on a review site, a map listing, a marketplace or social media. A recommendation is a personal endorsement, such as a friend, relative or colleague telling you who to use.

Why customers rely on them

  • They reduce risk. Seeing that other people had a good experience makes trying a new business feel safer.
  • They show things marketing doesn't. Reviews often mention waiting times, service quality, cleanliness, after-sales support and hidden costs.
  • They help compare options. A quick look at ratings and recent comments helps customers narrow down choices.
  • They act as social proof. People tend to follow what others have chosen, especially for unfamiliar purchases.

How to read reviews critically

  • Look at the number of reviews, not just the average rating.
  • Read recent reviews, since management and quality change.
  • Read the negative reviews and see how the business responded.
  • Be cautious if many reviews appear at once, use similar wording, or are all five stars with no detail.
  • Check more than one source.

What this means for businesses

  1. Ask customers for honest feedback. A polite request after service, by message or in person, is enough. Do not pay for positive reviews or offer rewards only for five-star ratings, since many review platforms prohibit this.
  2. Respond to every review. Thank customers for good reviews. For complaints, reply politely, acknowledge the problem and offer to resolve it offline.
  3. Fix recurring problems. If several reviews mention the same issue, treat it as a signal.
  4. Never post fake reviews. Fake reviews breach platform rules and can damage trust, and in Singapore they can raise consumer-protection concerns. Check the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) guidance if you are unsure.
  5. Keep your listing accurate. Reviews work best when your hours, address and services are current.

Review platforms and map listings often show ratings directly in search results, so reviews can influence whether people click on a business. Search engines do not publish exactly how reviews affect ranking, so treat reviews as a trust signal for customers first.

Responding to negative reviews

A short, calm reply works best. Acknowledge the experience, apologise where it is warranted, explain what you will do, and give a way to reach you. Avoid arguing in public or sharing the customer's personal details.
