## How this works
When your browser opens this page, it asks Lookup's server for the address your request came from. The server reads it from the connection headers (the same information every website receives), adds the approximate location that our hosting provider, Vercel, derives from the IP, and sends it straight back. It is not stored or logged, and the reply is marked never to be cached.

An IPv4 address is four numbers from 0 to 255 separated by dots, such as 203.0.113.42. An IPv6 address is longer, written as up to eight groups of hexadecimal digits separated by colons. If your connection supports both, your device picks one per connection, so this page shows the one it used.

Location from an IP is an estimate built from registry and routing data. It is usually right about the country and often the city, but not the street, and it can be far off for mobile networks, VPNs, iCloud Private Relay and corporate networks, which show the service's address rather than yours.

## FAQs
### What is my IP address?
It's the public address shown at the top of this page: the address the internet sees your requests coming from. It belongs to your current network (home Wi-Fi, mobile data or office), so it changes when you switch networks.

### Can someone find my home address from my IP?
Not from the IP alone. It points to your internet provider and a rough area, usually a city. Only your provider knows which account used an address at a given time.

### Why does my IP show the wrong city?
IP location is approximate. Mobile networks, VPNs, iCloud Private Relay and company networks often route traffic through another place, so the location is that of the network, not you.

### What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses are four numbers like 203.0.113.42, and there are only about 4.3 billion of them. IPv6 addresses are much longer (eight groups of hex digits) and were introduced so the internet doesn't run out of addresses.

### Does Lookup keep my IP address?
No. The address is read from your request, sent back to your browser and not saved. The answer is marked never to be cached, so no one else sees it.
