## How this works
Pick a length, tap the text box and start typing: the timer starts on your first key and the test ends when time runs out. Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a “word” is the standard five characters including spaces, so the score doesn't depend on how long the words in the passage are.

WPM counts only the characters you got right: correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Raw speed counts every character you typed. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right when you pressed them, so a mistake you go back and fix still counts against accuracy, though fixing it restores your WPM.

For comparison, a 2018 study of 136 million keystrokes from 168,000 volunteers (Dhakal et al., Aalto University and the University of Cambridge) found an average of about 52 WPM, with some typists reaching 120 WPM. Your score varies with the keyboard, the text and practice, so take the average of a few runs.

The passages are original, written for Lookup about everyday life in Singapore: buses at dawn, hawker centre queues, afternoon storms, kopitiam orders. Nothing you type is sent or stored; a shared link carries only your score.

## FAQs
### What is a good typing speed?
Anything above about 52 WPM is faster than average: that was the mean in a study of 168,000 typists. Trained typists are usually put at 60 to 90 WPM, and the fastest in the study reached about 120 WPM.

### How is WPM calculated?
Correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes typed. Typing 300 correct characters in 60 seconds is 300 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 60 WPM.

### How is typing accuracy calculated?
Correct keystrokes divided by all keystrokes. If you press 320 keys and 16 were wrong when you pressed them, accuracy is 304 ÷ 320 = 95%, even if you later fixed the mistakes.

### Is a 1-minute or 2-minute typing test better?
A 2-minute test gives a steadier score because one slow word matters less; a 30-second test is a quick warm-up.
