## How this works
A PayNow QR code holds a short text payload in the EMVCo merchant-presented QR format that PayNow and SGQR use. Each field is written as a 2-digit ID, a 2-digit length and the value. The PayNow block (ID 26) carries SG.PAYNOW, the proxy type (0 for a mobile number, 2 for a UEN), the number or UEN, whether the amount can be edited, and an optional expiry date. The currency is 702 (Singapore dollars), the amount sits in ID 54 and a reference in ID 62.

The last field (ID 63) is a CRC-16/CCITT checksum over everything before it, so a banking app can tell if the code was misread. We checked the layout against two widely used open-source PayNow generators and a published SGQR sample (matching their output and the sample's checksum), and tested sample codes through a QR decoder. Codes without an amount are static (the payer types the amount); codes with one are marked dynamic.

The code is built on your device: your number, amount and reference are not sent to Lookup or anyone else. The payer's banking app looks up the PayNow account and shows the registered name (partly masked, since nicknames ended on 6 June 2026) before they confirm, so always scan your own code once with your banking app before sharing it.

## FAQs
### Is it safe to make a PayNow QR code online?
With this tool, yes: the code is generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded. A PayNow QR only contains your PayNow mobile number or UEN and the payment details, which a payer could see anyway. It cannot be used to take money from you.

### Can I set a fixed amount in a PayNow QR code?
Yes. Enter an amount and switch off "Let the payer change the amount", and the payer's app shows that amount locked. Leave the amount at 0 for a reusable code where the payer types the amount.

### What is the difference between a PayNow QR and SGQR?
SGQR is Singapore's single, standardised payment QR label, co-owned by MAS and IMDA, that combines several payment QR codes into one label for shops. Merchants apply for it through a bank or payment provider. The code made here only carries PayNow details, which suits individuals, clubs and small sellers.

### Why does my PayNow QR show a different name?
Banking apps show the name registered to the PayNow account, not the name typed into the code. Since 6 June 2026 PayNow no longer shows nicknames for personal accounts: payers see the registered name with only some letters shown. If that name is not yours, the number or UEN is wrong.

### Does a PayNow QR code expire?
Only if you set an expiry date. Without one the code keeps working for as long as the mobile number or UEN stays registered to PayNow.
