## How this works
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: each month starts on the day of the new moon, so months have 29 or 30 days, and a lunar year has 12 months (353 to 355 days) or, about every three years, 13. The extra month is a leap month (闰月) that repeats the number of the month before it; 2025 had a leap 6th month and 2028 has a leap 5th month. Chinese New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, between 21 January and 20 February.

Dates here are calculated for UTC+8, the time zone of Singapore, Hong Kong and China, so they match the calendars printed locally. The conversion table for 1901 to 2099 was generated with the open-source lunar-javascript library and checked against Hong Kong Observatory dates such as Chinese New Year on 17 February 2026 and 6 February 2027.

A lunar birthday is the same lunar month and day each year, so its Gregorian date moves by up to about four weeks. By common convention, a birthday on the 30th falls on the 29th in years when that month has only 29 days, and a birthday in a leap month is kept in the regular month of the same number. Qing Ming and the Winter Solstice (Dong Zhi) follow the solar terms, not the moon, so they land on 4 to 6 April and 21 to 23 December.

### What is a leap month in the Chinese calendar?
