## How this works
The Hijri calendar is lunar: each month begins when the new crescent can be seen after sunset, so a month has 29 or 30 days and a year about 354 days, around 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. In Singapore, the Mufti and MUIS decide when each month starts, using imkan ar-rukyah (whether the crescent can be seen) under the MABIMS criteria shared with Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia: at sunset the moon must be at least 3 degrees above the horizon and at least 6.4 degrees from the sun.

This converter applies those criteria at sunset in Singapore for every month from 1343H to 1500H (1924 to 2077), using the open-source astronomy-engine library. Checked against every month start that MUIS published for 1445H to 1447H (the Muis Calendars 2024 and 2025 and the Mufti's announcements for Ramadan, Syawal and Zulhijjah 1447H), it matches all 28. Dates on months MUIS has announced are marked as such; later dates are calculated, and Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji 2027 also match the public holidays MOM has gazetted.

MUIS's announcement always decides the actual date in Singapore, so a calculated date can still move by a day. The Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia follows different rules and is often a day ahead: it started Ramadan 1447H on 18 February 2026, while Singapore began fasting on 19 February. Dates before 2022, when MABIMS adopted the current criteria, are calculated the same way and may differ by a day from what was announced at the time.

## FAQs
### When does Ramadan 2027 start in Singapore?
Ramadan 1448H is expected to start on Monday 8 February 2027 in Singapore. This is calculated with the MABIMS crescent criteria that MUIS uses; the Mufti confirms it after sunset on 7 February 2027. In 2026 Ramadan began on Thursday 19 February, as announced by the Mufti.

### When is Hari Raya Puasa 2027?
Hari Raya Puasa (1 Syawal 1448H) is on Wednesday 10 March 2027, the date MOM has gazetted as a public holiday. In 2026 it fell on Saturday 21 March, as announced by the Mufti.

### When is Hari Raya Haji 2027?
Hari Raya Haji (10 Zulhijjah 1448H) is on Monday 17 May 2027, the gazetted public holiday. In 2026 it was on Wednesday 27 May, after MUIS announced that Zulhijjah 1447H began on 18 May 2026.

### When is Awal Muharram 2027?
Awal Muharram, the first day of 1449H, is calculated to fall on Sunday 6 June 2027 in Singapore. Awal Muharram 1448H was on Tuesday 16 June 2026. It is not a public holiday in Singapore.

### Why is the Hijri date in Singapore different from Saudi Arabia?
Singapore starts each month when the crescent can be seen from Singapore under the MABIMS criteria (altitude 3 degrees, elongation 6.4 degrees), while Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar uses its own rules. The two often differ by one day: on 10 October 2026 it is 28 Rabiulakhir 1448H in Singapore and 29 Rabiulakhir on Umm al-Qura.
