# Swimming Lessons in Singapore

Group swimming lessons for children in Singapore usually cost $25–$40 a lesson, and private one-to-one lessons $70–$110. Most programmes follow SwimSafer 2.0, the national water-safety programme with six stages of about 12 hours each. Since July 2025, SwimSafer tests and certificates are handled on Singapore Aquatics' CAMS platform.

## Prices in Singapore
Typical 2024–2026 rates. Lessons at public pools are cheaper than at private pools or condos. Schools may also charge a registration fee and SwimSafer test fees, and you pay pool entry separately at ActiveSG pools.

## Licences
- **SwimSafer 2.0 accredited instructor** (Sport Singapore / Singapore Aquatics, optional): Instructors must be accredited to teach and put students forward for SwimSafer 2.0 assessments. SportSG publishes a list of accredited instructors. Check: https://www.activesgcircle.gov.sg/academies-clubs/initiatives/swimsafer
- **National Registry of Coaches (NROC)** (Sport Singapore (CoachSG), optional): Voluntary register of certified coaches with valid Standard First Aid (CPR/AED). Search CoachSG's Find a Coach to check a coach's status. Check: https://coachsg.sportsingapore.gov.sg/nroc/find-a-coach

## How to choose
- Check that the coach is an accredited SwimSafer instructor if you want your child certified. Only accredited instructors can register students for official assessments, and SportSG warns that look-alike 'SwimSafer' websites aren't affiliated.
- Ask about group size. Four to six children per coach is common for beginners, and larger groups mean less time in the water per child.
- Look at the pool, not just the price. Lessons at a heated or shallow condo pool suit young beginners, while public pools are cheaper but busier and cost a few dollars for parents to enter.
- Expect each SwimSafer stage to take a few months. Each stage is about 12 hours of lessons, so a school promising a stage in a few weeks is rushing.
- Many schools start children in SwimSafer at around 5–6, with water-confidence or parent-and-child classes before that.

## Red flags
- Coaches who can't show SwimSafer accreditation but promise official certificates.
- Groups too big for the coach to watch every child, especially in deep water.
- Long prepaid terms with no make-up policy for rain-outs or illness.
- No first aid or CPR training.

## FAQs
### How much are swimming lessons in Singapore?
Group lessons for children typically cost $25–$30 per 45-minute lesson at public pools and $30–$40 at swim schools or private pools. Private one-to-one lessons cost about $70–$110. Some schools charge a $50–$90 registration fee, SwimSafer tests cost about $20–$50, and you pay pool entry at public pools.

### What are the SwimSafer 2.0 stages?
SwimSafer 2.0 has six stages, each about 12 hours of lessons. Stage 1 builds water confidence. Stage 2 targets 25m of continuous swimming, Stage 3 50m, and Stage 4 (Bronze) 100m with throw rescues. Stage 5 (Silver) is 200m within a time limit plus survival skills, and Stage 6 (Gold) is 400m with personal survival techniques such as the HELP posture.

### How do SwimSafer assessments work now?
Since 1 July 2025, private SwimSafer assessments are booked on the Centralised Assessment and Management System (CAMS) run by Singapore Aquatics. Students take the theory quiz online after registering for the practical test, and certificates are issued through CAMS. Assessment slots are released weekly, up to three months ahead. Primary school students can also take SwimSafer through their MOE school.

### At what age should my child start swimming lessons?
Most swim schools start children on SwimSafer at around 5 to 6 years old. Younger children can join water-confidence or parent-and-child classes. Earlier exposure helps with comfort in the water, but formal stroke technique usually develops better once children can follow group instructions.
