# Rooftop Bars in Singapore

Rooftop bars need a police liquor licence and follow the same rules as any bar: the legal drinking age is 18, prices are usually "++" (about 19.9% extra), and smoking is banned in outdoor areas except at approved smoking corners – NEA stopped approving new ones in 2017. Many enforce dress codes and minimum spends.

## Licences
- **Liquor Licence** (Singapore Police Force (Police Licensing & Regulatory Department), required): Any outlet selling alcohol for consumption on or off the premises needs a liquor licence, which sets its permitted supply hours. Sale to anyone under 18 is an offence for the licensee. Check: https://www.police.gov.sg/e-Services/Police-Licences/Liquor-Licence

## How to choose
- Check the dress code – many rooftop venues refuse shorts, singlets or slippers in the evening.
- Ask about minimum spend or cover charges for window or edge tables, especially around sunset and on event nights.
- Check weather policy: some rooftops close open-air areas during rain without refunds on deposits.
- Happy hours are usually early evening; confirm whether prices are nett or "++".

## FAQs
### Can you smoke at rooftop bars in Singapore?
Only in approved smoking corners. NEA prohibits smoking in all areas of entertainment outlets, including outdoor refreshment areas, except approved smoking corners. NEA stopped accepting applications for new outdoor smoking corners from 30 June 2017, so many rooftop bars are fully non-smoking.

### What is the drinking age at rooftop bars?
18. Licensed sellers cannot sell alcohol to or let anyone under 18 drink on their premises. Some venues set a higher minimum entry age, so bring ID.

### What does "++" mean on a Singapore menu?
"++" means a 10% service charge and 9% GST will be added. GST is charged on the service charge too, so the multiplier is 1.1 × 1.09 = 1.199 – a $50++ meal costs about $59.95. IRAS lets restaurants that levy a service charge show pre-GST prices, but they must state prominently that prices are subject to GST and service charge.
