Every pharmacist in Singapore must be registered with the Singapore Pharmacy Council, so check the register if unsure. A pharmacist can advise on over-the-counter medicines at no charge, which can save a GP consultation for minor ailments. For long-term prescriptions, ask about generics and compare prices with the polyclinic or your Healthier SG clinic.

- **Pharmacist registration and Practising Certificate** (Singapore Pharmacy Council, required): Pharmacists must be registered with SPC and hold a current Practising Certificate. Check: https://prs.moh.gov.sg/prs/internet/profSearch/main.action?hpe=SPC
- **Retail pharmacy licence** (Health Sciences Authority (HSA), required): Retail pharmacies supplying prescription and pharmacy-only medicines are licensed by HSA.

## How to choose
- For minor ailments, ask the pharmacist first. They can recommend over-the-counter treatments for free and tell you when you need a doctor.
- For long-term medicines, ask whether a generic exists. Generics have the same active ingredient, strength and form and are registered by HSA.
- Compare where you fill long-term prescriptions: polyclinic Standard Drug List medicines are 50–75% off for citizens, and Healthier SG enrollees with CHAS get chronic-medicine subsidies at their enrolled clinic.
- Buy online only from licensed pharmacies; HSA warns that health products sold online can be fake or adulterated.
- Keep one list of all your medicines and supplements and ask the pharmacist to check for interactions.

## FAQs
### Can I buy prescription medicine at a pharmacy without a prescription?
No. Prescription-only medicines need a doctor's or dentist's prescription. If your clinic doesn't stock a generic version, ask for a written prescription to fill at a retail pharmacy. Over-the-counter items such as common painkillers, antihistamines and cough syrups can be bought after speaking to the pharmacist.

### Is medicine cheaper at a polyclinic?
Often, for long-term medicines. Citizens get up to 75% off Standard Drug List medicines at polyclinics if household income per person is $2,300 or less, and 50% above that; PRs get 25%. CHAS cardholders enrolled in Healthier SG can get similar chronic-medicine subsidies at their enrolled GP, up to 87.5% for some seniors.

### How do I check if a pharmacist is registered?
Search the Singapore Pharmacy Council's register on MOH's Professional Registration System. It shows whether the pharmacist is registered and holds a current Practising Certificate.
