# Financial Advisers & Insurance in Singapore

Anyone who advises you on investments or life insurance in Singapore must work for a MAS-licensed or exempt financial adviser and be listed on MAS's register of representatives. Check both before you meet. Ask whether you pay through commission or fees, and remember most new life policies give you a 14-day free-look period to cancel.

- **Licensed or exempt financial adviser (firm)** (Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), required): Firms giving financial advice must be licensed under the Financial Advisers Act or be exempt (e.g. banks and insurers). ## How to choose
- Ask for the adviser's MAS representative number and look it up. The firm on the register must match the firm on their name card.
- Ask how they are paid: commission built into products, an advice fee, or a percentage of assets under management. Each creates a different incentive.
- Choose advisers who do a fact-find on your income, goals and existing cover before recommending products. MAS rules require advice to have a reasonable basis.
- Compare life insurance premiums on compareFIRST and read the product summary and benefit illustration before signing.
- Be wary of recommendations to surrender existing policies to buy new ones, as switching often incurs losses.

- No representative number, or the person is not on the MAS register.
- The person is on MAS's Investor Alert List, or promises guaranteed high returns.
- Pressure to sign the same day or to pay into a personal account.
- Advice to cancel existing policies without a written comparison.

### Can I cancel a life insurance policy after signing?
Most new life insurance policies in Singapore have a 14-day free-look period from when you receive the policy, during which you can cancel and get the premium back, less certain expenses such as medical check-up costs. For investment-linked policies, the refund may be adjusted for changes in unit prices.

### Are financial advisers in Singapore paid by commission?

### What is the difference between an insurance agent and a financial adviser?
