## Prices in Singapore
2026 fees at the three driving centres. Practical lessons are 100-minute sessions. Most learners need 20 to 30 lessons, so lesson count drives the total more than any other item. Traffic Police test fees went up on 13 March 2026.

## Licences
- **Driving Instructor's Licence** (Singapore Police Force (Traffic Police), required): Anyone who gives driving lessons for payment needs a valid instructor's licence under the Road Traffic Act. Teaching or abetting unlicensed lessons can lead to a fine of up to $2,000, up to 6 months' jail, or both. SPF publishes a contact list of licensed private driving instructors. Check: https://www.police.gov.sg/knowledge-hub/traffic/traffic-matters/waiting-time-and-passing-rates-of-theory-and-practical-tests
- **Provisional Driving Licence (PDL)** (Singapore Police Force (Traffic Police), required): Learners need a PDL before any practical lesson. It is digital, costs $25, is valid for 2 years, and you can apply after passing the Basic Theory Test and eyesight test. Learners aged 65 and above need a medical certificate first. ## How to choose
- Look up first-time pass rates before you enrol. SPF publishes 12-month figures for each centre and each private instructor. For Aug 2025 to Jul 2026, first-time Class 3A pass rates were 53% at BBDC, 51% at SSDC and 39% at CDC.
- Decide between Class 3 and Class 3A. A 3A licence covers automatic cars only. A Class 3 (manual) licence lets you drive both manual and automatic cars, but you will need more lessons to get there.
- Compare total cost per lesson, not the enrolment fee. Off-peak sessions save about $9 per lesson. Over 25 lessons, that adds up to more than $200.
- Choosing a private instructor lowers the hourly rate, but test-car rental, circuit bookings and possibly extra lessons can offset the savings. Private candidates also had lower first-time pass rates (30% for Class 3A).
- Pick a centre you can reach easily for 20 to 30 sessions. BBDC is in Bukit Batok, CDC in Ang Mo Kio and SSDC in Woodlands. Practical lessons and the test take place at the centre's circuit and on nearby routes.

## Red flags
- An instructor who cannot be found on SPF's list of licensed private driving instructors, or who offers lessons in an unmarked personal car.
- Lessons offered before you hold a valid PDL. Taking practical lessons without one is an offence.
- A 'guaranteed pass' package. Traffic Police testers conduct the test, not the school or instructor.
- Pressure to book many simulator or extra 'warm-up' sessions that are not part of the centre's published compulsory modules.

## FAQs
### How much does it cost to get a driving licence in Singapore?
Through BBDC, CDC or SSDC, a Class 3 or 3A licence typically costs about $2,300 to $2,900 in 2026. That covers enrolment, 20 to 30 practical lessons at $77 to $92 each, simulator modules, test-car rental of $240 to $317 per attempt, and test fees. Private instructors charge about $38 to $60 an hour, so that route can be cheaper overall. Each failed practical test adds another test fee and car rental.

### What are the steps to get a Class 3A licence?
Enrol with a driving centre. Pass the Basic Theory Test (BTT) and eyesight test, then apply for a Provisional Driving Licence ($25, valid 2 years). Take practical lessons and pass the Final Theory Test (FTT). Complete the required simulator modules, then pass the Traffic Police practical test. After passing, pay the $50 licence fee. You must be at least 18. New drivers are on probation for their first year and must display the probationary plate.

### Is a private driving instructor cheaper than a driving school?
Per hour, usually yes: about $38 to $60 an hour, against $77 to $92 per 100-minute school lesson. But private learners still pay a driving centre for an account, circuit practice and test bookings, and test-car rental can run $300 or more. SPF data shows lower first-time pass rates for private candidates (26% for Class 3 and 30% for Class 3A, Aug 2025 to Jul 2026). Extra retests can wipe out the savings.

### How much are driving test fees in Singapore in 2026?
From 13 March 2026, the Basic and Final Theory Tests cost $7.20 each, up from $6.50, and the practical driving test costs $40, up from $33. This is the first increase since 2016. The theory tests rise to $8 in March 2027. The practical test rises to $45 in 2027 and $50 in 2028. These amounts do not include the driving centre's test-car rental, which is the larger cost.

### Which driving centre has the highest passing rate?
For first-time practical tests from Aug 2025 to Jul 2026, BBDC had the highest rates: 52% for Class 3 and 53% for Class 3A. SSDC learners passed at 39% (Class 3) and 51% (3A), and CDC learners at 30% and 39%. The Traffic Police updates these figures regularly, along with waiting times, which were mostly under one month in mid-2026.
