## Licences
- **Practising certificate (Singapore solicitor)** (Supreme Court of Singapore; law practices regulated by MinLaw's LSRA, required): Divorce proceedings must be handled by a Singapore solicitor with a current practising certificate, unless you act in person. ## How to choose
- If you and your spouse agree on the divorce and on all ancillary matters (children, assets, maintenance), ask for a fixed fee for the simplified uncontested track.
- Since 1 July 2024, you can file uncontested on the divorce itself while asking the court to decide the matters you disagree on. This usually costs less than a fully contested case.
- Pick a lawyer who regularly handles HDB and CPF division if you own a flat, because HDB eligibility and CPF refunds shape what each of you can afford next.
- Ask for a staged fee estimate (filing, ancillary hearing, appeal) rather than an open-ended hourly rate.
- If your household income is low, check legal aid: from 1 October 2026, the Legal Aid Bureau's limit is $1,650 per capita monthly household income.

## Red flags
- A cheap fixed fee that turns hourly as soon as any issue is disputed, without saying so upfront.
- Pushing litigation without discussing mediation or counselling options.
- No discussion of how HDB, CPF and children's arrangements will be handled.

## FAQs
### How much does a divorce cost in Singapore?
Published law firm fees for a simplified uncontested divorce in 2025–2026 are typically $1,200 to $3,500, depending on whether there are children or property. A contested divorce usually costs $10,000 to $35,000 or more in legal fees, with longer disputes costing more. Court fees, disbursements and GST may be on top, so ask for an all-in estimate.

### Can I divorce in Singapore without proving fault?
Yes. Since 1 July 2024, couples can file for divorce by mutual agreement as a ground for showing the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without alleging adultery, unreasonable behaviour or separation. You must still have been married for at least three years, unless the court allows an earlier filing on grounds of exceptional hardship.

### Can I get legal aid for a divorce in Singapore?
Singapore citizens and PRs can apply to the Legal Aid Bureau. From 1 October 2026, average per capita gross monthly household income must be $1,650 or lower. Your home's annual value must be $21,000 or less, savings must be under $12,000 ($42,000 if aged 60 or above), and a merits test applies. You may need to pay a contribution.

### What is a simplified uncontested divorce?
It is a faster, lower-cost track where both spouses agree on the divorce and on all ancillary matters, including custody, care and control, maintenance and division of assets. Papers are filed together and usually processed without a contested hearing. If you agree on the divorce but not on ancillary matters, you can file uncontested but it will not be treated as simplified.
